Over the last 17 years Combat Conditioning has formed an integral part of all Craig's programs working with teams such as the British and Irish Lions, Ireland, Wales, Wasps, and Leicester. Programs that have been the envy of other clubs and that many have copied.
There is no doubt that the many facets of combat within rugby are the most fatiguing aspects of the game. Many of the high intensity elements of the game are 'non-running' based.
Then why are we never taught the principles of Combat Conditioning and how to coach this area in any Sports Science Degree, Coaching Degree, or other Rugby Related Coaching Course?
Answer: This is a specialized area and often we don't know where to start or how to break it down in order to effectively coach it to our players. Many of us look to the purest combat sports such as wrestling and judo and attempt to implement this into our programs only to find that there is limited transfer and it is highly dangerous.
